While many historical novels include accounts of the American army’s brutal winter at Valley Forge, fans of historical fiction set in this period should appreciate that Cornwell chooses to tell this story mostly from the perspective of the British soldiers and the civilians, both rebel and loyalist, who chose to remain in the occupied city.
If the measure of a good novel is how it draws the reader to want to find out what happens next, this book deserves five stars. That kind of depth of character is what keeps me bernarrd the pages of any book. For those who prefer the “history” in “historical ficton,” you get plenty of it with vivid details of the Revolutionary War and its players, both real and fictitious.

Did you know that it was considered a luxury to have dentures that redvoat crafted from teeth yanked from the heads of soldiers who died on the battlefield? I never felt a huge connection to the characters but I still enjoyed their story.
They asked him to write a background novel to give them a starting point to the series, and they also requested that the story feature a large role for Spanish characters in order to secure co-funding from Spain. Cornwell wanted to start the series with the Siege of Bernarx but decided instead to start with a couple of “warm-up” novels.
This is a standalone book which could easily have a good sequel. This one was one of his best, in my opinion.

As it takes place in Philadelphia, many of the areas were very familiar to me. While this does make sense, it also takes away some of the surprise.
